Sound Cloud Sunday Debuted January 21 On Laurel Canyon Radio

Our debut edition of Sound Cloud Sunday debuted on Sunday, January 21 (we will replay it again on Monday night at 11pm PST) and we are excited about the enthusiastic reception to an overview of the unsigned, should-be-signed and indie artists paying tribute to and building on the Laurel Canyon Sound (#laurelcanyonsound).

As promised, we said we would fill you in with more information about the artists featured on our show and here they are:

The Rightly So – Hurry Up

Hometown: Buffalo, NY
Album: Self-Titled Debut
Review Snippet: Gregory Zeis and Jess Chizuk write and sing folk and Americana music with elements from gospel, SoCal soft rock and even pop tossed into the mixture. Their sound is charming and features lyrical originality that’s unusual for Americana-flavored music.

Anderson East – Somebody Pick Up My Pieces

Review Snippet:  With his doe-eyed gaze and mop of curly blonde hair, Anderson East is definitely a looker, but it’s his raspy and soulful voice that will really grab your attention

Blue Rose Code – Love Is (featuring Julie Fowlis)(aka Ross Wilson)

Hometown:  Edinburgh, England

Album:  Water of Leith (on Heretu Records)

Review Snippet: Addressing themes of love, loss, travel, home, accepting the past and embracing the future, are painted with colours of folk, jazz, soul and pop; an eclecticism that has become a hallmark of Blue Rose Code and has seen him compared to John Martyn, Van Morrison and Tom Waits.

Hannah Aldridge – Burning Down Birmingham

Hometown:  Muscle Shoals, AL

Album:  Gold Rush (2nd album)

Review Snippet:
Hannah writes vivid lyrics about her troubled past that are balanced by the striking melodies and the power of her band. I would describe most of the songs as Americana-tinged heartland rock delivered in a distinctive Southern voice. The drumming by Garrett Dean (a new name to me) and guitar playing by Sadler Vaden (solo artist and member of Jason Isbell’s band) are outstanding.

Cody Jinks – 65 Days In LA

Next Time In LA:  (based on the lyrics of this song, probably never, but actually April 27 at Coachella)

Review Snippet:Cody Jinks is an incredible talent, with a sound of his own, yet keeping traditional country alive. Nashville needs to pay attention, because the Jinks star is on the rise!

Market Junction – Give It Time

Album:  “Give It Time” is a single from no album, Market Junction has 2 self-released albums

Jake Morley – Falter

Hometown:  London, England

Album:  The Manual (3rd album – self-released)

Next Time in LA:  Only as far as Kansas City for the Folk Music Collective.

Hollow Coves – Coastline

Hometown:  Brisbane, Australia

Album:  Wanderlust (EP) (found on Soundcloud)

Review Snippet: Quoting influences such as Angus & Julia Stone, Ben Howard, & The Paper Kites, the boys are setting out to deliver their own brand of indie folk. Blending an earthy folk sound, acoustic melodies & vocal harmonies; Matt and Ryan take turns delivering lyrics of reflection, frequently harmonizing as their voices blend together and complement each other.

Bet Smith and The Currie Brothers – Signs of Hostility

Hometown:  Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada

Album:  Tightropes And Loose Ends (1st album – available on CD Baby)

Review Snippet:  Tightropes & Loose Ends pulls together tracks from three years of collaboration between singer-songwriter, Bet Smith and multi-instrumentalists, Rob and Andrew Currie. The album title highlights their newest single, Tightropes, along with the band’s first release, Loose Ends – the two tracks acting as bookends to a period of time over which strangers met, made music, developed a familial bond, let art consume their lives, pushed, pulled, and eventually returned to reality.

Roo Panes – Tiger Striped Sky

Hometown:  Wimborne, Dorset, UK

Album:  Paperweights (on crc records)

Review Snippet:  The lyrical honesty and blend of classical instruments and guitars is what I feel sets his music apart from other contemporary folk artists. Something about his voice and music makes me feel so peaceful and calm. If you simply must buy a new album this year, let this be one of them. Get your hands on his debut and earlier work, and take a listen to his songs, “I’ll Move Mountains”, “Once”, and “Ran Before the Storm”.
