Bandits On The Run – Now Is The Time

Hometown:                New York City

Album:  From the EP “Now Is The Time” released June 25.

Review Snippet: The resulting EP, fittingly titled Now is the Time, is hands-down Bandits on the Run’s most daring, lush, and sophisticated work yet. Seamlessly shifting from shades of The Beatles to Fleetwood Mac to David Byrne to Laurel Canyon, the Bandits’ musical influences are apparent in the EP while still carving out a distinctive voice all their own. Everyone in the trio writes their own songs and takes turns singing lead, which means on this six song EP each member gets two songs to step into the spotlight and showcase their melodic, lyrical, and vocal prowess. Very rarely does a band feature three voices equally matched in skill and power, each sounding so completely different from the others and yet still masterfully blending so well together. “That’s the alchemy that’s been there since Day 1,” says Regina. “You can practice all you want (and we do) but if that spark of magic isn’t there it’ll never sound quite right. We are so lucky we found that spark in each other.”

Sarah Walk – The Key

Hometown:    Chicago, IL

Album:  From the album “Another Me” available on her website.

Review Snippet: The album itself is like a smooth snuggle of honey trickling down your ear and massaging your brain. It tells you it will get better but that pain will be part of the healing process. Sarah Walk pulls punches but she also knows how to make meaty resolutions and that is why this album, both in its music and narrative, is an absolute triumph.

Grant Maloy Smith – The Coal Comes Up

Hometown:    Jacksonville, FL

Album:  From the album “Appalachia Southern Stories” out June 25.

Review Snippet: The third album in singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Grant Maloy Smith’s roots music series is called Appalachia: American Stories. It follows his critically-acclaimed releases, Yellow Trailer and Dust Bowl: American Stories. As “The Coal Comes Up” opens, Jelly Roll Johnson’s harmonica wails mournfully beneath Smith’s lyrics and their deliberate exclamation of inner turmoil. Matt Combs’ fiddle, Rob Ickes’ Dobro and Trey Hensley’s guitar converse in the bouncy “Down to Hatchabee Road,” a song of going down to the river to wash one’s sins away. All twelve original tunes, written by Smith, provide folksy tales to enjoy. “The Red Haired Girl from Hazard” is a tribute to his mother, “Sometimes You’re the Holler” is a make-believe story of some little girls and their grandmother. “Gas Station Chicken” shows Smith’s witty side with a musical recipe that’s finger-pickin’ good.

Rosie Flores And The Talisman – So Sad

Hometown:    San Antonio, TX

Album:  New single released July 9 on Mule Kick Records.

Review Snippet:

Rosie Flores has been a cornerstone of American roots music for more than four decades, leaving her mark upon the intersecting worlds of rockabilly, blues, western swing, California country, jazz, and roadhouse rock & roll.

She’s a songwriter. A pioneering frontwoman. A guitar virtuoso and hard-touring road warrior whose milestones are just as diverse as her music, including nominations from the CMA and ACM Awards,  a Peabody, two Ameripolitan Awards, and a long line of acclaimed solo albums. Still breaking new ground, she returns to her roots with her newest project, Rosie Flores and The Talismen.

David Goundry – Fire & Water

Hometown:    UK

Album:  New single released July 9 from the EP “Time And Place”

Review Snippet: Reminiscent of laid-back 70’s singer-songwriters . Bluesy, folksy finger picking and blues rock riffs aligned to well crafted melodies.

Rose City Band – Feel Of Love

Hometown:    Portland, OR

Album:  From the album “Earth Trip” released June 25 on Thrill Jockey.

Review Snippet: Earth Trip is the third record in as many years by Rose City Band; the laid-back-cosmic-country outlet for guitarist and songwriter Ripley Johnson. Though he is known for the psychedelia of projects Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo, Rose City Band continues to prove itself as an attention-worthy foray. The arrangements are tighter but still feel free to explore and sprawl in length. The lyrics are concise. It’s clear Johnson is comfortable in these songs and confident in the themes they explore.

Mark Rogers – Every Once In Awhile

Hometown:    Williamsburg, VA

Album:  Single released June 28.

Review Snippet: With his new LP “Laying It Down”, singer/songwriter Mark Rogers cements his place in the indie folk pop scene as not just a reliably strong composer, but as a sonic force to be reckoned with. “Laying It Down” features a certain cinematic texture in lyrical delivery that makes his work flow much better than most.-

Eric Shicotte – Miss’ry Pacific

Hometown:    Milwaukee, WI

Album:  From the EP of the same name out July 16 on Black Country.

Review Snippet: With his booming voice bobbing and weaving around fiddle and steel punches and a rollicking train beat, Wisconsin-based singer, songwriter, and ironworker Erik Shicotte doesn’t waste time getting his point across in the first few seconds of Miss’ry Pacific, his brand new EP to be released on July 16th via Black Country Rock Media. In a six song span, listeners will be greeted with waltzes, train songs, honky tonkers, and country ramblers, on which Shicotte sings with humor and pathos about trains, trucks, and hard-working heroes who hang out around highways, rails, and honky-tonks. Well studied in the art of outlaw-ism, there are echoes of the greats in Shicotte’s songs—Waylon, Willie, Cash, Haggard, and the wit of the late great John Prine, just to name a few—but underneath it all lies a hard-working authenticity that puts him, along with contemporaries like Colter Wall, into a level of legitimacy unobtainable by some of today’s drugstore cowboy songwriters.

Joe Bourdet – El Capitan (2021 Mix)

Hometown:    Los Angeles

Album:  From the debut album “Meadow Rock” released in June on Mountain Sound Recordings.

Review Snippet:
The sonic profile of the album harkens strongly to the early to mid 70s folk-rock and singer/songwriter era, the Laurel Canyon sound, as it is popularly known.  The vocals are folk vocals, unassuming, unaffected, untrained and, where vibe over precision prevails, not adverse to straying from perfect intonation.  The presence of several female voices in support of Bourdet’s is a big feature, Mimi Michel lends a cosmic country feel to the songs El Capitan and Call You Friend,  whilst Alana Amram, who co-wrote Lost Along the Way, evokes the darker shades of The Mamas and The Papas. Guitar being Bourdet’s primary instrument, they are liberally applied throughout these compositions. The acoustics use some natural ambience where possible, and strive toward clarity and realism.  The electric guitars frequently employ the swirling effect of a spinning Leslie speaker cabinet, and betray a fondness for various melodic guitar heroes; George Harrison, Joe Walsh, Duane Allman, and David Lindley.  The rhythm sections are anchored variously by three distinctive drummers, the Memphis grooves of George Sluppick, the muted Nigel Olsson-esque fills and rock power of Will Scott, and the flowing and creative folk rock flourishes of Justin Smith.  Long time collaborator Brian Filosa chugs along joyously on bass on many of the songs as well.
