Sound Cloud Sunday – June 10, 2018 (Episode 17)

Sound Cloud Sunday  June 10, 2018  (Episode #17)

We’ve been out on the road soaking up music (and baseball) all around the country and took a week off or so to rest our collective aural cavities, but never fear, there is more great new unsigned, should be signed and indie artists converging on our collective consciousness so without adieu:

Daniel Kemish – They Say I’m Crazy

Hometown:  Southhampton, UK

Album:  From the new album “Under The Same Sky”  out May 25 on Far Out Records.

Review Snippet:  After several years of bar performances and the release of two EPs, Kemish decided to release his debut CD. Recorded in Nashville, an attempt was made at creating a raw, made in one day sound, which certainly paid off. His early influences are evident as his CD combines sounds of Country, Folk and Americana in such a way that you could be fooled into thinking you are listening to an American performer, even moreso as many of the songs speak of life on the road, a typical American theme.

Whiskey Myers -Stone

Hometown:  Palestine, TX

Album:  From their 2016 album “Mud”  on Wiggy Thump Records.

Review Snippet:  On Mud, Whiskey Myers make the kind of spirited racket purveyed by Gov’t Mule, Black Stone Cherry, Blackberry Smoke, Supersonic Blues Machine et alIt’s a thriving scene, and Whiskey Myers earn their place in it here. On The Riveropens the album with acoustic picking, weeping violin, slide guitar and a whiskey-ravaged croak as the rhythm section unleash a boot-tapping beat halfway between a country hoedown and Americana rock-out. The title track has both grungy power and grinding menace. It ends with the sound of a spaceship whirring down to earth, the album’s sole concession to modernity. The rest is a retreat from the now, designed to provide comfort in these difficult times.

Cautious Clay – Cold War

Hometown:  New York City

Album:  “Blood Type”  self-released in February.

Review Snippet:  Up until six or seven months ago, Joshua Karpeh was working as a leasing agent marketer in New York City. In September, months after quitting his day job to finally go all-in on music, he quietly released his debut single, “Cold War,” on SoundCloud under the name Cautious Clay. It was a doozy of an entrance, his warm, soulful voice simmering over a Grimes “Genesis” type-beat — enough to grab the attention of a couple hundred thousand SoundCloud listeners. Clay has since released a string of singles, followed by his debut EP Blood Type, which dropped in late February.

John Calvin Abney – Cowboys And Canyon Queens

Hometown:  Norman, OK

Album:  “Coyote” out May 18 on Black Mesa Records

Review Snippet:  For the past decade, John Calvin Abney has made a name for himself as a solo artist and sought-after sideman. He’s toured as lead guitarist for fellow Oklahoman John Moreland, recording with him on his last two acclaimed albums, and in between, the prolific Abney found time to add another impressive record to his own catalog (2016’s Far Cries And Close Calls), supporting the release with a run of solo shows during a whirlwind year filled with as much struggle as success. Abney’s new full-length, Coyote (out May 18 on Black Mesa Records), draws from this tumultuous time, fearlessly staring down distance, isolation and fading love, as well as loss, fear and disassociation from the self.

Blueroomess – Big Yellow Moon

Hometown:  Barcelona, Spain

Album:  Debut album  “In Nowhere Land” released in May on Break Records.

Review Snippet:  Blueroomess is a folk/roots band from Barcelona composed of musicians with long careers and diverse origins.

Their music has a vintage sound; the clear influence of American roots music is immediately noticeable. Upon deeper listening an inviting mix of folk, country, and blues emerges, combined with the laid back style of the Tulsa sound, and the strength and dynamism of skiffle.

Levi Parham And Them Tulsa Boys And Girls – Boxmeer Blues

Hometown:  McAlester, OK

Album:  “From their album “It’s All Good”  out next Friday (June 15) on Horton Records.

Review Snippet:  What happened in August 2017, with musicians Paul Benjaman, Lauren Barth, John Fullbright, Jesse Aycock, Dylan Aycock, Aaron Boehler, Dustin Pittsley, Michael Staub, and Lauren Farrah, was a combination of mean soulful guitar riffs and loose vibey grooves, with hints of inspiration and influence from Derek And The Dominos, The Band, The Rolling Stones, and The Allman Bros.

It’ s All Good is set for a US release on June 15th, but is already picking up steam in Europe, debuting at #2 on the EuroAmericana Charts several weeks ago.   weeks before the official release.

Emily Davis – Moonlight Voodoo

Hometown:  El Paso, TX

Album:  From the new album “You Me And The Velvet Sea”  self-released in April (her 5th album).

Review Snippet: A petite frame hardly limits the energy detonating from Emily Davis, a folk singer/songwriter whose lyrics strive to provoke thought and whose stage presence could be captured in two words: firework pixie. Wearing punk on her chest and her lyrical heart on her sleeve, Emily turns the act of singing into soulful storytelling. “…gorgeous close harmonies – two voices paired to perfection”
