Teskey Brothers – So Caught Up

Hometown:      Melbourne, Australia

Album:  From their  second album “Run Home Slow” on Glass Note Records.

Review Snippet:

Website:

Originally from Victoria, Australia, the Teskey Brothers – made up of brothers Josh and Sam Teskey and their friends Brendon Love and Liam Gough – began playing together as teenagers. They released their debut LP, Half Mile Harvest, in 2017 and rapidly won critical acclaim at home and here in the UK, as well as gaining huge popularity. After playing sold-out shows at Omeara and Union Chapel, as well as festivals around the UK this summer, the quartet have now released their second album, Run Home Slow.

The record opens with Let Me Let You Down, which starts with a slow, bluesy groove before Josh says ‘go again’ and the track restarts. Right from the off it sets the tone that this is a very organic record, flaws and all, and makes it feel incredibly authentic – almost like you’re being let in on a secret jam session that’s being recorded live. The song’s laid-back vibe is balanced out by Josh’s raw yet soulful vocals and I like the slightly 60s feel it has too. The lyrics are also very clever, with a twist before the chorus kicks in and capturing the flawed characters well, and it sets the template for the next 45 minutes very well.

Throughout the album one thing that stands out to me is the experimental feel of it. Tracks like Man Of The Universe, with its mix of jazz and gospel influences, and the hopeful yet defiant Hold Me, which features a choir and chanted, repetitive imagery that burns into your brain in the best way, show the quartet willing to explore a different side of their sound. I particularly liked the use of instruments such as organ and horns and how the band play with them to add a different vibe on each song, such as the contrast between the downbeat, lonesome vibe of Rain and the jazzy yet slightly surreal Sunshine Baby, which wouldn’t sound out of place on the La La Land soundtrack. That said, there’s still plenty of room for the classic blues and Motown sound that characterised Half Mile Harvest, particularly on the subdued, piano-led Carry You – a theme which runs through the whole record – and the funky, chilled-out Sun Come Ease Me In with its vivid, detailed characters.

Yola – Shady Grove

Hometown:     Bristol England

Album:  From the album “A Walk Through Fire” released in February on Easy Eye Sound/Nonesuch

Review Snippet:
Yola worked with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach to create Walk Through Fire, with Auerbach producing and the pair co-writing the album’s songs alongside guest writers like Bobby Wood, Pat McLaughlin and Dan Penn. They also assembled an impressive team of studio musicians, including bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash), pianist Wood (Elvis Presley) and legendary harmonica player Charlie McCoy. Vince Gill lends backing harmonies to the soul-baring torch song “Keep Me Here,” while bluegrass greats Molly Tuttle, Ronnie McCoury and Stuart Duncan add a laid-back twang to the title track.

Next Time in LA: Who knows? But catch her at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco in October.

Cass Clayton – B-Side

Hometown: Denver

Album:  From her album “Play Nice” released July 19

Review Snippet:

Cass Clayton is a rising star in the Colorado area and is noted for her vocal and slide guitar work.  Here she stays off the guitar and instead features collaborator Taylor Scott on guitar as they blend rock, blues, funk, jazz and gospel.  The album tends toward rock and funk and features all original tunes.  The stories told are interesting, mostly dark and delivered with lots of feeling.

Cass shows off her soulfulness with the opening tune, “Let’s Not Be Friends.”  Blending blues, rock and perhaps a little gospel, the tune starts thiher stuff once again.

3 Pairs of Boots – It Ain’t Easy

Hometown:      San Francisco,   CA

Album:  From their debut album “Gone South” released July 12 on Dark Country Music

Review Snippet:
The song was inspired by the idea that taking the short cut, the easy way out, is not the best way to live a good life. Yes, it’s easier to grab a fast food burger than to go to the farmers market, buy real food, go home, and cook a good meal. That takes more time, more effort, but it’s so much better for you in multiple ways. It’s easier to be lazy, gain weight, not take care of yourself, but you won’t feel good about yourself. It’s easier to spend money instead of saving it, but having money banked creates financial independence, giving you control over when you work, who you work for.
This one perhaps was Buffalo Springfield meets The Smiths, yet I also modelled the guitar parts in the third verse after Les Paul.

Frank Lombardi – Gracefully

Hometown: Asbury Park, NJ

Album:   From the album “Predawn” released in March on Il Sistema Entertainment

Review Snippet:
Lombardi is part of a long lineage of Asbury Park troubadours. Producer Jon Leidersdorff along with engineers Erik Kase Romero and Tim Panella did a great job employing everything that Lakehouse Recording Studio has to offer to capture something that stands as a great representation of our little musical mecca by the sea.

Ryan Traster – Endless Summer Blues

Hometown:      Minneapolis

Album:  From his album “Chases Obscures” released on Slow Street Records on July 19.

Review Snippet:
The upcoming new album by Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter Ryan Traster (July 19th, Slow Start Records) features that warm, worn-in vibe of an album that’s been in your cool parents record collection since you were a kid. Eventually, it gets passed down to you to take along into “the real world” and is there when you need to be reminded of being a kid again.

Guy Forsyth & Jeska Bailey – Pockets

Hometown:  San Angelo

Album:  From their first collaboration “Conspirators released July 26 on Small and Nimble Records.

Review Snippet:

The remarkable voice of Jeska Forsyth, who married Guy early in 2018 is the Yin to Guy Forsyth’s Yang. Jeska, a singer since childhood, started performing in 3rd Grade theatre and never stopped. She once sang the National Anthem for Nascar and was accompanied by F-16 Fighter jets, and ruled the San Angelo music scene. Jeska Owned a Blues club in San Angelo named Sealy Flatts where she met her husband for the first time. Now they are co-writing material for her upcoming album, that people demand every time she sings.

The Forsyth’s duo performance is what people call “intimate” and “ breathtaking,” with Guys vocals only being lifted with Jeska singing harmony softly behind him when she isn’t leading her own tunes.

Guy is no newcomer to the stage having opened and performed with such acts as Ray Charles, Robert Cray, Dr.John, B.B. King, Jimmie Vaughan and Lucinda Williams. Guy enjoys using the duo as a fun singer songwriter situation where he can become connected on a more personal level with the audience.
