Review Snippet: In the 21st century, Australian Americana and alt-country music have succeeded in taking the key ingredients of country music and blending them with folk, indie-rock, blues and psychedelia to create a soundtrack to urban cosmopolitan living, while still recognising and celebrating the genre’s organic roots-based origin

Mustafa – Stay Alive

Hometown:             Toronto, Ontario Canada

Album:   From the EP “When Smoke Rises” released May 27 on Regent Park Sounds.

Review Snippet: In the video for “Stay Alive,” a searing portrait of his community and his commitment to it, black and brown men in chains and hoodies make elaborate hand gestures to the camera as Mustafa pleads for their survival. He offers himself to them to ensure it. “Just put down that bottle, tell me your sorrows,” he sings. “I care about you fam.”  His folk-inflected music, tender and calm, and these videos, serene and defiant, honor his neighborhood with the softness so often absent in attitudes and policy towards poor people.

Spacey Jane – Booster Seat

Hometown:      Australia

Album:   From the album “Sunlight” released last June

Review Snippet:

Spiralling around the rise and fall of a trilling guitar hook, the mellow ‘Booster Seat’ deals with “feeling like anxiety and depression are taking control away from you,” frontman Caleb Harper explained to triple j’s Richard Kingsmill in 2020. “I drew on feelings of my childhood and those vulnerabilities you have and how they’re still very relevant today.”

He likens the way he’s depended on others to the way a child riding in a car implicitly trusts their parents to keep them safe by restraining them. It’s a complex emotional metaphor made easy to grasp by the imagery of the ‘Booster Seat’ and the song’s gorgeous refrain.
