Sound Cloud Sunday – March 8, 2020

Another Sunday another episode of Sound Cloud Sunday, our indie salute to the music inspired by the Laurel Canyon era.  We’re especially enjoying this week’s episode featuring the latest album from The Sweet Remains.

The Sweet Remains – Goodbye Arizona

Hometown: Arizona, New York, Massachusettes

Album: From their album “Music Fills The Spaces” self-released February 14

Review Snippet: Lush harmonies, distinguish The Sweet Remains from the throngs of guitar-toting troubadors and harken back to super-groups of the 60’s and 70’s like CSN, the Eagles, Simon & Garfunkel.

The Copper Tones – Tempting The Bottle

Roots music with a favorable twist of Soul, Rock, Americana and more, they’ve coined their genre as “Soulgrass.” This group of talented and diverse multi-instrumentalists give a performance not to be missed! Love Me In The Dark – Riding Wind

Hometown: Los Angeles

Album: Title track from their album released February 14.

Review Snippet: Love Me In The Dark creates music inspired by Americana, Folk, Soul and Roots traditions. Dovetailing vocal blends of harmony and melody, beautifully crafted vulnerable lyricism, ethereal slide guitar and meticulously designed songwriting create an emotionally rich experience for the mind, body, and spirit. LMITD feels, now more than ever, we need vulnerability, love, hope, compassion and gratitude in our daily lives. The two have created a sound completely authentic to who they are as individuals and to who they have become together. Steve is one of the last true audiophiles who not only produces records, but builds everything by hand in his studio, from the tube microphones he uses, to the tube preamps and tube compressors used on each of their recordings. The listener can hear the level of precise detail, artisan-ship and deep care infused into these productions.

Next Time in LA: Santa Monica Playhouse March 29.

Good Harvest – Garden

Review Snippet: “Good Harvest’s singing really knocked me off my feet. Their harmonies are unbelievably tight and masterful but at the same time food for the heart

Christopher Lockett – Jacarandas

Hometown: Los Angeles via Woodbridge, VA

Album: From the album “Between The Dark and The Light” released back in December 2018 on Gritbiscuit.

Review Snippet: He’s a country songwriter swimming against the prevalent Nashville current of pop country to return to the deep waters of songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle. “Mbira Mboogie” is a remarkable and unexpectedly spirited instrumental of that rings exotically, like a marimba in a pawnshop, displaying his multi-instrumental chops, as do a few other intermingled instrumental excursions, such as “A Road Back Home” and “Heart Like A Train,” a great title for him as his heart seems both locomotive in its range.

Lisa Mills – Greenwood Mississippi

Hometown: Mobile Alabama (via New Orleans)

Album: From the album “The Triangle” released January 24.

Review Snippet: Originally recorded by Little Richard in the early 1970s in Muscle Shoals, Mills’ rendition of “Greenwood, Mississippi” is the first single release off of her upcoming album, The Triangle, and is a tribute to the incredible sound and feel of the great southern soul music of the 60s and 70s. Mills recorded the track with some of the original musicians in the same studio where it was first recorded.

Caleb Caudle – Let’s Get

Hometown: Stokes County, North Carolina

Review Snippet: He emerged from the shadows with Better Hurry Up, his eighth studio album. Its 11 songs showcase Caudle’s vivid lyrics and foreboding vocals, as well as the work of an A-list cast of musicians. John Jackson of the Jayhawks produced, and guest vocalists include Courtney Marie Andrews, Elizabeth Cook, Gary Louris, and John Paul White.

Chloe Foy – Callous Copper

Hometown: Gloucestershire, England

Album: From the EP “Callous Copper” released February 21 on Anti-Fragile.

Review Snippet: It is hard to describe Foy’s voice, but, when you hear it live, you understand why she is growing in popularity. There is something wholesome and hearty to her vocality like a chicken soup for the soul. Add on that she is friendly and smiley, and you love that she feels like a spokesperson for broken hearts; giving you a Covergirl sensibility with a Sylvia Plath verbosity. In essence, she painted romantic pains with a lyrically, colorful brush that could easily do a Maybelline campaign.

Robert Vincent – My Neighbour’s Ghost

Hometown: Liverpool, England.

Album: From the album “In This Town You’re Owned” self-released on February 14.

Review Snippet: Singer/songwriter Vincent came to his sound via his father, who introduced the young Vincent to American country icons Waylon Jennings and Emmylou Harris. Perhaps Vincent gravitated toward those artists because he too has a larger-than-life voice that envelops tracks in feelings, almost like a hypnotic smoke. Or perhaps those artists inspired him to develop a powerful voice with an impressive emotional range, a veritable Meryl Streep with pipes.

Sierra Hull – Middle of the Woods

Hometown: Byrdstown, TN

Album: From the album “25 Trips” released February 28 on Rounder Records.

Review Snippet: Made with producer/engineer Shani Gandhi (Kelsea Ballerini, Dierks Bentley, Sarah Jarosz, Alison Krauss), 25 Trips continues the musical journey begun on Weighted Mind, a body of work that built off Hull’s bluegrass roots and ventured into entirely new terrain. But while its predecessor assumed a sparse and stripped-back palette, 25 Trips embodies a far more intricately arranged sound—an effect achieved with the help of peers like guitarist Mike Seal, bassist Ethan Jodziewicz, violinist Alex Hargreaves, and fiddler Christian Sedelmyer, as well as several musicians that Hull has long admired (including bassist Viktor Krauss, guitarist Bryan Sutton, and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Duncan). Along with integrating electric instrumentation and percussion into her material for the first time, Hull dreamed up the album’s eclectic textures by embracing a free-flowing process that often gave way to lightning-in-a-bottle improvisation.

Next Time in LA: April 18 at the Ruth Shannon Center for The Performing Arts in Whittier.

Sam Fischer – This City

Hometown: Sydney

Album: First single.

Review Snippet: When Sam Fischer started to lose all faith in ‘This City’ becoming the hit it was destined for, the rest of the world told him to never give up. Now, the soulful smash stands at over 40 million streams on Spotify and 20 million on Apple. If you’ve used Tik Tok this year then you almost certainly know how widely the track has been loved by its users and has become a viral sensation with its delicate guitar plucking melody and Sam’s incredible raw vocals.

Mike Mattison – Charlie Idaho

Hometown: Minneapolis, MN

Album: From the album “Afterglow” out March 20 on Landslide Records.

Review Snippet: You Can’t Fight Love,” the debut solo release from singer/songwriter extraordinaire Mike Mattison, is available now in stores and at online retailers everywhere. Best known for his work in Scrapomatic, the Derek Trucks Band and currently the Tedeschi Trucks Band, with whom he has won Grammy Awards, Mattison’s new album, “You Can’t Fight Love,” shows off his impressive pipes on an eclectic range of original material that spans blues, rhythm and blues, Americana, and rock. Mattison is backed by Scrapomatic cohorts Paul Olsen and Dave Yoke (guitars), the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Kofi Burbridge (keyboards) and Tyler Greenwell (drums), among others.
