Johnathan Rice – The Long Game

Hometown:      Los Angeles

Album:  From his new album “The Long Game” released May 10 on Mano Walker Records.

Review Snippet:  While ‘The Long Game’ is Rice’s fourth studio record under his own name, it’s his first collaboration with celebrated producer Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, Aimee Mann), a longtime friend who played an integral role in shaping the album’s character. It was Berg who encouraged Rice to drop his vocal range deeper, a move that simultaneously evokes the weary cynicism of Leonard Cohen and the cinematic romance of Frank Sinatra’s more downbeat work, and it was Berg who insisted that Rice record the collection the same way he’d spent much the previous year: alone.

Next Time in LA:  Supporting the Felice Brothers at the Bootleg Theatre on June 17.

Yola – Deep Blue Dream

Hometown:      Bristol, England

Album:  Her debut album “Walk Through Fire” was released in February on Easy Eye Sounds/Nonesuch.

Review Snippet: The Dan Auerbach–produced album is a contemporary twist on a traditional sonic tapestry of orchestral strings, fiddle, steel, and shimmering tremolo guitars. Walk Through Fire is a career-defining and genre-bending release from one of the most exciting emerging British artists in music today. Yola’s arresting vocals captivate with sincere tales of heartache and loves lost, forgotten, and broken.

Reed Turchi – Teacher’s Blues

Hometown:      Nashville

Album:  .From his 11th album, the live album “Midnight In Memphis” released in April  on Devil Down Records.

Review Snippet: Reed’s eleventh album, Midnight in Memphis follows the gospel-influenced Just a Little More Faith, also featuring the Kudzu Choir. He called the album “a celebration of the music I love, performed with the people I love”; reviewers called it “a halo of authenticity” filled with “radiant warmth,” and Music News 360 said of a performance at New York’s Bitter End, “the feature of the night was the feeling of communal joy, being present together in shared vibration.”

Faye Webster – Right Side of The Neck

Hometown:   Atlanta

Album:  From her album “Atlanta Millionaires Club” out on May 24 on Secretly Canadian Records.

Review Snippet:  Faye Webster isn’t afraid to tell you how she feels. Rooted in a familial lineage of folk, 21-year-old songwriter Webster’s forthright, exposed lyricism pays homage to the great Americana traditions of songwriting while drawing from Webster’s own experiences immersed in Atlanta’s hip-hop scene. Her carefully-cultivated sound organically mingles that inherited country and folk with her time immersed in rap collective Awful Records, injecting the traditional with a clandestine jolt.

Bailen – Your Love Is All We Know

Hometown:  New York

Album:  Their debut album “Thrilled To Be Here” was released on Fantasy on February 26.

Review Snippet:  BAILEN’s otherworldly musicality springs from a very deep well, in fact, it’s in their DNA. Raised in New York by their classically trained parents, Daniel, David and Julia immersed themselves in the family’s diverse record collection. The group’s highly collaborative songs are formed by three very different individuals who were all inspired by literature and a love of language. The resulting confident, meticulous songcraft of Thrilled To Be Here is rooted in the young group’s preternatural dexterity, insight and lyrical bite.

Next Time in LA:  With Hozier at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on June 18 and at the Observatory in Santa Ana with Hailey Knox on June 20 and at the Troubadour on June 21.

The Brothers Reed – Disciple

Hometown:      Ashland, OR

Album:  Their new album “Caught In A Dream” was self-released in April.

Review Snippet:  The Americana Folk trio The Brothers Reed proved themselves to be prolific performers in 2018 by playing an impressive 236 shows. Yet, their uniquely beguiling charisma is more impressive than a statistic could ever be; even if that statistic will tell you how well-matured The Brothers Reed’s style is Their upcoming single “Never Mind” combines the ever-accessible roots of Americana, and they also plant plenty of their own distinction around the sound with their own unique emotive energy and piercingly raw vocals. But as raw as the vocals resonate, paradoxically they also flow with concordance even when vocal restraint is thrown back. The Power in the harmonics from the two sibling vocalists reverberate over the quiescent melodies combine with the imagery of the lyrics to create a potent mix. Drawing the track to close with a soaring intricate guitar riff and amplifying the energy in the choruses and verses was nothing short of a genius move. Velvet & Stone – By The Water

Hometown:      Devon, UK

Album:  New single!

Review Snippet:   Following on from the success of recent single ‘OH BOY’, receiving airtime on BBC 6 music and continued support from BBC introducing, are back with this open and upbeat single ‘BY THE WATER’, just released on Friday. It is the perfect soundtrack for Summer, providing another sweet taste of what is to come in their highly anticipated self-titled album, released this June.

‘BY THE WATER’, written last winter, was one of those songs that all came together very quickly and just sounded right. Often those are the best songs! Leaving the true meaning unexposed Velvet & Stone allow the listener to create their own personal connection to the track.

Portraying folk/Americana vibes perfectly, Velvet & Stone combine haunting soundscapes with catchy pop hooks and great songs providing an original and beautiful take on a traditional genre. Led by the ethereal blend of Lara Snowdon’s vocals and Kathryn Tremlett’s violin, joined by their touring band of Kev Jackson (electric guitar), Paddy Blight (bass), Garry Kroll (Drums) along with producer Josiah Manning (acoustic guitar and keys).

TK & The Holy Know Nothings – Desert Rose

Hometown:      Portland, OK

Album:  From their debut album “Arguably OK” coming out May 24 on Mama Bird Records.

Review Snippet:  Following this lineage on their debut album Arguably OK, TK & The Holy Know-Nothings cites Doug Sahm, The Holy Modal Rounders, The Flatlanders, Dan Reeder, and Jeffrey Frederick & the Clamtones as strong influences. For Kingman, though, it’s Terry Allen’s 1979 art country gem Lubbock (on everything) that’s most affected his songwriting. Like Allen, Kingman writes with delicacy about indelicate things. The songs on Arguably OK are about dead ends, addiction, self-sabotaged relationships, drug trips gone bad (or good? or both?), and, above all, holding out for the real thing. His lyrics are tightly crafted and profoundly paradoxical; simultaneously self-deprecating and unapologetic, clever and crass, irreverent and tender; and sometimes riotously funny. Each song takes you somewhere unexpected, every phrase crafted with the same signature combination of dirtbag revelry and haltingly poignant poetry. He brings all of himself to these songs–the honest, unglorified truth.

Mac DeMarco – Nobody

Hometown:      LA via Brooklyn, NY

Album:  His new self-released album “Here Comes The Cowboy” came out on Friday on Mac’s Record Label.

Review Snippet:  He h On his fourth album, Here Comes the Cowboy, DeMarco keeps it weirder and more mellow than ever. Take the title track, which started as a twangy guitar part that tumbled out when he was messing around in his garage last year. Next came a phrase that he repeated like a mantra: “Here comes the cowboy …”

Next Time in LA:  May 22 at the Alex Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo.

The Nude Party – Chevrolet Van

Hometown:      Catskill Mountains, New York

Album:  Their eponymous debut album came out in 2018 on New West Records.

Review Snippet: More like brothers than bandmates, the six Nude dudes bring an energy to their live shows unlike any band I’ve seen as of late. And with such tight tunes reminiscent of The Animals and The Velvet Underground, you’d never know that most of the members have only been playing their instruments for about five years now.

With a recent move out of North Carolina and into the Catskill Mountains of New York, the Nudes are rolling up their sleeves to focus on writing and recording more under the guidance and mentorship of Black Lips’ drummer Oakley Munson. While the boys of The Nude Party are actually keeping their clothes on for the most part these days, the party aspect of their namesake is still fully operative. Their work-hard-play-hard mentality is clearly paying off too, with the group touring and supporting acts like The Growlers, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Black Lips, Ty Segall, Twin Peaks, Post Animal and Night Beats.
