Sound Cloud Sunday – May 9, 2021

Sound Cloud Sunday May 9, 2021

Happy Mothers Day, y’all…our episode of Sound Cloud Sunday #laurelcanyonsound is all over the place, 17 year old pop singers, trios from Sweden, jam band supergroups, we have it all.  After next week, the show will appear right below:

 Evann McIntosh – Nobody Else

Hometown:  Kansas

Album:   From the album “Character Development” out August 27 on Mom + Pop Records.

Review Snippet: Very impressive project for a 17 year old.

Riley Downing – Deep Breath

Hometown: Missouri

Album:   From the album “Starting Over” out this Friday on New West Records.

Review Snippet: The first single, “Deep Breath,” exemplifies the album’s loose, roots-driven feel. At times reminiscent of the laid-back, rhythm-heavy sounds of ‘70s Tulsa, with expected doses of New Orleans and fuzzed out guitar that is otherworldly, it’s easy to imagine that the tune is some long-lost single from a bygone era. Of course, it doesn’t fully matter when the song comes from so much as that it stands as a bit of quiet (or not-so-quiet as the case may be) comfort in a time of trouble. “Deep Breath” exudes warmth.

Cass McCombs – The Great Pixley Train Robbery

Hometown: Concord, CA

Album:   From the album “Tip of The Sphere” out April 30 on Anti/Epitaph

Review Snippet: Of course, McCombs rewards deep listening. Tip of the Spheres is his ninth studio album of ever-expansive Americana, one where his myth properly matures. It follows the excellent showing of his 2016 expanded palette of an album, Mangy Love, in numerous end-of-year lists.

The High Hawks – Singing A Mountain Song

Hometown:

Album:   From the album “The High Hawks” their debut album out On LoHi Records.

Review Snippet:

No one knows where the train will take them. It’s one you jump on out of the curiosity and excitement of the unknown. The very wonder of what the stars and the spirits will conjure on any given jubilee. And what the hell is a High Hawk?  Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans), Brian Adams (DeadPhish Orchestra), and Will Trask (Great American Taxi), come together with friends like Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth) as well as others to play songs, perhaps bringing an unusual sparkle to the galactic core.

Beta Radio – Don’t Leave Me Behind

Hometown: Wilmington, NC

Album:   From the ep “Afraid of Love” released on Nettwerk in January.  Whole album shortly.

Review Snippet: The Wilmington, NC duo—Benjamin “Ben” Mabry and Brent Holloman—transform a tumultuous two years of corporeal and existential wandering into 10 songs cast in folk-style literary lyricism, Americana spirit, and orchestral experimentation.

Eddie Ray Arnold – Beautiful Day

Hometown:    Athens, GA

Review Snippet: songs tend to be about God, family, friends, love and everything in between. And with a style that’s pure Americana.

Review Snippet:

OP ARTIST ON THE RISE. BEST DESCRIBED AS POP WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR, WILL MIXES UPTEMPO, FUN MUSIC WITH A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE ON YOUNG ADULTHOOD. Grace Pettis (featuring the Indigo Girls) – Landon

Hometown:  Austin, TX

Album:   From the album “Working Woman” just released on Friday on MPress Records.  Dar Williams, Ruthie Foster, the Watson twins and more.

Review Snippet:  A blend of rocking roots, Americana and Country/rock, produced by singer/songwriter Mary Bragg, Working Woman is a collection of 10 original songs and features guests Indigo Girls, Ruthie Foster, Dar Williams, The Watson Twins, Gina Chavez and Mary Bragg. The record features an all-female/non-binary band and showcases Pettis from confident to her most vulnerable through well-crafted storytelling. Pettis is the winner of many songwriting contests, including NPR’s Mountain Stage New Song Contest, and has received grants from the Buddy Holly Foundation. Pettis has three previous independent releases, Grace Pettis (2009,) Two Birds (2012,) and EP Blue Star in a Red Sky (2018.)

The Rose Petals – Welcome To The Big Top

Hometown:  Seattle/LA

Album:   From the album “American Grenadine” out April 23 on Envoy Records.

Review Snippet: Rose Petals are a collaboration between lyricist Peter Donovan and songwriter Elijah Ocean. From the Seattle area, Donovan has served most recently as frontman for All the Real Girls (a band to whom I really should have paid more attention). Ocean is a multi-instrumentalist whose five solo LPs explore a wide range of the roots music spectrum. Under the guise of this new act, their music favors a classic, alt.country sound, evocative of predecessors from Jayhawks to Green on Red or the Long Ryders. The Rose Petals call their music post-americana.

Zach Schmidt – Go My Way

Hometown:  Pittsburgh, PA

Album:   From the album “Raise A Banner” released March 19 on Boss Dawg Records.

Review Snippet:  “Go My Way” plays like a Byrd’s’ song out straight out of a time warp from around 1965. Freddy Fender shows up for a few moments in “I Look Different Through Your Eyes.” A voice that is absolute honey, and Mike Ness gritty at the same time, it is so easy to get caught up in the entirety of Raise a Banner and equally lost in it as Zach moves from rockabilly to crooner and back again. The comfort he illustrates in his own voice and skin as he takes us on the journey with him puts his versatility on full display.

Andy Johnson – Wisteria Bloom

Hometown:  Georgia

Album:   From the album “Help Yourself” self-released April 22.

Review Snippet:

The songs on Help Yourself celebrate a dedication to craft and nature. A hopeful lightness juxtaposes against an emotional weight as a dizzying stable of central Georgia pickers drive Johnson’s already considerable compositions with the heartbeat of a Saturday night back porch jubilee

Kyle McKearney – Annie

Hometown: Ft. John, BC

Album:   Self-released single.

Bowerbirds – SBSF

Hometown:  Raleigh, NC

Album:   From the album “Be Calm Young Lovers” released April 30.

Review Snippet:  Known for its soft and folksy paeans to nature.

Black Twig Pickers – Knight on The Road

Hometown: Virginia, West Virgina

Album:   From the album “Friend’s Peace” released April 2 on VHF.

Review Snippet:  The Black Twig Pickers are a group defined by their forward thinking approach to a type of music most often associated with times gone by. The group has established itself as a collection of dedicated practioners of old time music re-cast and shaped by their appreciation of modern improvisation, drone, and punk.
